Oral Exams

During your first visit with Dr. Toni Henderson, you'll receive a comprehensive oral exam to identify problem areas such as cavities, fractured teeth and fillings, and other issues. Dr. Henderson and her staff will also focus on how your teeth are lining up with each other, and if they could ultimately cause headaches, sinus pressure, or other problems. Most likely, x-rays will need to be performed during an oral exam, but they are generally quick and painless and will help Dr. Henderson in the treatment of your teeth.

Cleanings

Routine professional teeth cleanings can be essential to good dental health. Cleanings keep your teeth healthy and looking fresh. When combined with oral exams and x-rays, cleanings can also identify potential dental problems and treat them before they get worse. Tooth decay, oral pain, and even tooth loss can be prevented with routine teeth cleanings. Dr. Toni Henderson and her trusted staff will clean your teeth, identify potential problems, and work to keep your teeth healthy and beautiful during this traditional dental treatment.

Periodontal (gum) issues are also looked for in teeth cleanings. One of the most common conditions affecting the mouth is periodontal disease. If the gums aren't properly taken care of, it can not only lead to tooth loss, but to general health problems as well, including heart disease and stroke. Periodontal disease is often caused by bacteria that infect the soft tissue of the gums. Early warning signs of periodontal disease may include swollen, inflamed, and bleeding gums. Dr. Toni Henderson offers comprehensive periodontal care at her general dentistry practice in the Beverly Hills and Santa Monica area. Periodontal disease is a serious dental problem, but with regular checkups and treatment, it can be significantly reduced or entirely prevented.

Non-Surgical Gum Treatment

Periodontal, or gum, diseases can often be treated in the early stages without surgical intervention. Dr. Toni Henderson utilizes arestin, an antibiotic used in conjunction with scaling and root planing to treat periodontal disease. Scaling removes tartar and plaque from the gums. This is followed by planing, which smoothes the root surfaces and allows the gum tissue to heal. Dr. Henderson will check the progress of the gums at a later appointment. As always, the best way to prevent periodontal disease is to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day to prevent the formation of plaque.

Radiographs (X-Rays)

Dental X-ray examinations provide valuable information that your dentist could not collect otherwise. With the help of radiographs (X-rays), Dr. Henderson can look at what is happening beneath the visible oral tissues. X-rays pose a far smaller risk than many undetected and untreated dental problems.

If you are a new patient, the Dr. Henderson will recommend a full set of radiographs to determine the present status of your mouth and to help analyze changes that may occur later. If you have had recent radiographs at your previous dentist, Dr. Henderson may ask you to have the radiographs forwarded.

The schedule for needing radiographs at recall visits varies according to your age, risk for disease and signs and symptoms. Recent films may be needed to detect new cavities, or to determine the status of gum disease or for evaluation of growth and development. Children may need X-rays more often than adults. This is because their teeth and jaws are still developing, making them more likely to be affected by tooth decay than adults.

Oral Hygiene Instructions

Every patient who visits our office is give detailed instructions on how to protect his or her oral health. Basic oral hygiene instructions are vitally important, yet often overlooked by other dentists. Dr. Toni Henderson makes it a hallmark of her practice to educate all of her patients on how to properly take care of their teeth and gums. With that knowledge, the chances of big problems down the road can be reduced, even eliminated.

Pediatric Treatments

Dr. Toni Henderson and her staff are proud to offer dental treatment to patients of all ages. The best way to prevent future dental problems is to start taking care of teeth and gums from early childhood on. Among the many options here at our Beverly Hills practice, we offer:

Fluoride Treatments

Many of us might remember rinsing our teeth with fluoride out of small paper cups handed to us in elementary school. Fluoride rinses are still important for children and no less important as we grow older. Routine fluoride treatments can assist in the fight against tooth decay by helping teeth build resistance to decay-forming acids. Dr. Toni Henderson offers this standard dental treatment to children to keep their teeth healthy and prevent future problems.

Sealants

Cleaning the uneven surfaces of the teeth can be a difficult task, which leaves these areas more vulnerable to cavities. Dr. Toni Henderson can attach sealants to the teeth in order to protect them from this. Sealants are tough coatings that can block plaque and food from living in these hard-to-clean areas. First, the teeth will be cleaned and examined. Then, Dr. Henderson will coat the teeth with sealant, which will bond to each tooth and harden. The whole treatment should only take a few minutes for each tooth. Sealants are long-lasting and extremely durable methods of preventing tooth decay and other future dental problems.

Orthodontic Referrals for Braces

Dr. Henderson has an excellent orthodontist she can refer younger patients to for traditional braces, should they not qualify for Invisalign® treatments. Straightening out the teeth can not only make for a more aesthetically pleasing smile, it can help with other common problems caused by crooked or misaligned teeth. Dr. Henderson will go over all treatment options at the initial appointment.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

The silver-toothed smile is a thing of the past. Tooth-colored fillings at our Beverly Hills dental office are tinted to match the color of your teeth. They are also considered safer and more durable than traditional mercury fillings.

Composites

Tooth-colored (composite) fillings are made out of a strong resin and are virtually undetectable. Traditional amalgam fillings have a tendency to weaken the tooth because so much of the original tooth must be removed. Tooth-colored fillings require less removal of the tooth and can be expected to last much longer than amalgam fillings.

During your visit, Dr. Toni Henderson will prepare the damaged tooth by removing the present filling or decay and binding the new composite to the surface of the tooth. The resin will then be hardened by a special light focused on the area. Tooth-colored fillings are revolutionary, making the results of one of the most common dental treatments more pleasing to the eye. Tooth-colored fillings at our office serving Beverly Hills and Santa Monica make it easier for you to chew, smile, and talk. Tooth-colored fillings also come in varying shades of white so they blend with the natural color of your teeth.

Another advantage to tooth-colored filling material is its ability to act as a dental bond. The tooth colored composite material is not only more aesthetically pleasing, but it also requires less removal of the original tooth.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays, or indirect fillings, are excellent ways of treating cavities and damaged or decayed teeth. Made of strong porcelain or metal, inlays and onlays are a longer-lasting alternative to traditional fillings. They are first shaped and molded to fit the teeth and then cemented into place. The inlay fits inside the cavity while the onlay rests on top of the tooth to provide durable and long-lasting results.

Endodontic Therapy (Root Canals)

Many people fear going to the dentist because they are scared of needing a "root canal"; however, this procedure is not one to fear. In fact, root canal therapy is one of the most frequently performed and highly effective treatments to eliminate pain and restore damaged teeth. Every tooth has a small system of nerves called pulp. The pulp provides nutrients to the tooth, and is attached to the tooth's root. If the pulp becomes damaged or infected, it could lead to the loss of the tooth. With root canal therapy, Dr. Toni Henderson removes the pulp and cleans and reshapes the root. She will then permanently seal the area and, in most cases, cover it with a crown. Dr. Henderson tries to make every procedure as painless and comfortable for the patient as possible, and endodontic therapy is no exception. Root canal therapy can go a long way in saving your teeth.

After extraction, Dr. Henderson can provide you with options such as a dental implant, dental bridge, or partial dentures to replace the missing tooth.
